History of EXIOBASE
Developed through European research in the early 2010s, EXIOBASE has evolved into a time-series database covering global trade, emissions, and resource use. It is now widely used in research and industry for footprinting, including Scope 3 carbon accounting.
2012
EXIOBASE
Primarily funded by the EU research programmes. The core development was led by a consortium including NTNU, CML Leiden University, IIASA, and TNO. The first database to combine high sectoral detail with consistent environmental accounts
2013
EXIOBASE 2
Extended the database into a multi-year time series with improved data harmonisation and broader environmental indicators
2019
EXIOBASE 3
Introduced improved update methods and consistency, enabling widespread use in both research and industry applications such as Scope 3 accounting
2024
XIO Sustainability Analytics
Established to ensure ongoing development and annual updates of EXIOBASE, including improved macroeconomic and environmental data, refined sector mappings and emissions, and growing use in commercial applications
